Companies providing alternate cowls

Pros Cons
Stock Van's Cowl
  • Ships with finish kit (consider transport costs for other options)
  • No mods necessary if you stay with the plans and 2-blade prop
  • Snorkel provides small manifold pressure increase (speed / ceiling)
  • Look of "snorkel" (high pressure air intake extension closer to prop)
  • Requires modification for optional AC compressor
Show Planes Cowl
  • Accomodates Barrett Cold Air Induction
  • Round holes ("Cirrus Look")
  • No "ugly snorkel"
  • Easily split lower cowl (see e.g. this FB thread)
  • Requires several modifications (baffles, air intake)
  • Requires modification for optional AC compressor
  • Stock mechanical injection engines may need modification, see this FB thread
James Cowl
  • Fits optional James engine plenum
  • Requires modification for optional AC compressor
  • Was out of production for some time, potential cooling issues?
  • Stock mechanical injection engines may need modification, see this FB thread
  • Heater air supply inlet interferes with cold air induction FB thread 3/2024
